Garth is a highly regarded advocate in regulatory, medical and professional indemnity matters.
Since 1994, Garth has acted for clients in a raft of regulatory investigations and prosecutions involving serious harm, fatal accidents, biosecurity issues and food safety. Garth is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most experienced and sought-after health and safety lawyers. He is vastly experienced in dealing with WorkSafe, the CAA and MNZ. Garth has acted for clients in numerous sectors including aviation, fishing, port companies, tourism, forestry, construction, manufacturing, engineering, agriculture, horticulture, mining, electricity, gas and education. He appeared for companies in the leading sentencing cases under the HSWA 2015 and its predecessor and he has argued a number of successful sentencing appeals in the High Court. Garth has advised clients and represented them in numerous Coronial Inquests and Royal Commissions; including the Royal Commissions into the Pike River Tragedy and the Canterbury Earthquakes and Coronial Inquests into the Christchurch Mosque Shootings, Whakaari White Island, the death of Folole Muliaga, the Fox Glacier Skydiving tragedy. He has appeared in many medical-related inquests, acting for organisations and individuals. Garth successfully defended a midwife in the last medical manslaughter case brought in New Zealand.
